Frequently Asked Questions1. You market EMail Purgatory as a discretionary service. What the heck is a discretionary service? A discretionary service is a service that you use with your own discretion. When you use the EMail Purgatory discretionary email security service, you must also use your own best judgment. (WARNING: Not suitable for politicians, or people who drive while talking on their cell phone.) 2. What is active content? The phrase "active content" may refer to any email or email attachment that contains an "object" that your computer will automatically attempt to activate. For example, the object may be a pornographic image that your email program will display in its preview pane. 3. What are other common examples of active content? Common examples of active content include HTML, Active-X, Javascript, Java, cookies, macros, video, and music. There are many others. 4. Is active content always a Bad Thing? No, active content was designed to be a Good Thing. Bad people have corrupted it into a Bad Thing. 5. Can I disable active content? If you are among the vast majority of the world population using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Microsoft Outlook Express, then you cannot disable all forms of active content. If you could, neither of these programs would work. You can disable certain types of active content, however, so please consult your documentation if you wish to go that route. Be prepared for an adventure in acronyms! 6. What is a web beacon? The phrase "web beacon" refers to an object hidden inside an HTML email or attachment, which sends out a secret signal when the object is activated. The object is usually a single-pixel image, which is virtually invisible to you. Usually, the web beacon contacts "home base" and sends them your email address and some secret information about you. 7. Why are web beacons a Bad Thing? Web beacons are a blatant invasion of your privacy. They are used to identify you, track your movements on the Internet, and ensure that you will continue to receive even more spam in the future. 8. Will EMail Purgatory work with my Yahoo account? No, EMail Purgatory will not work with your standard Yahoo webmail account. Yahoo does offer an optional POP service, however, and EMail Purgatory should work with that service. 9. Doesn't my Yahoo account remove web beacons? Not exactly. Yahoo removes any web beacons set by other people, but then adds a Yahoo web beacon to collect the same information. Either way, Big Brother is watching you! 10. Can I remove my current email client? Not really. EMail Purgatory is not a replacement for your current email program. You cannot create email, send email, reply to email or forward email using EMail Purgatory. Use EMail Purgatory to safely preview your emails and attachments from any computer in the world that has Internet access! 11. What's wrong with my current anti-spam software? It's probably not safe, and it probably doesn't work. Those programs usually run on your computer, so every mistake they make endangers your safety. Don't be fooled by their claims! They consider an 80% success rate good, but that means 20% of the Bad Things still make it to your computer. Only EMail Purgatory is 100% safe, and only your best judgment is 100% correct. 12. Why are there only twelve questions in the FAQ? The guy asking the questions got tired and decided to go take a nap! (Just kidding, more questions and answers will be added soon.)
