Crimson Star's Amateur Rocketry Page

Amateur rocketry clubs often hold rocket mail flights as a fund-raising activity.

At the worst, it is more fun than washing cars but usually it is a great way for all members to work together for a good cause.

This envelope was one of many flown in the second of two rockets launched simultaneously by the Reaction Research Society, Inc. at their Mojave Test Area in California.

You may be able to see the wrinkles in the envelope, caused by the crash. Not to worry though, the clever RRS members just stamped the envelope "DAMAGED BY CRASH" and probably increased the resale value! These guys weren't born yesterday, that's for sure.

I took this photo of the Mojave Test Area way back in May 1966. The structure in the center is a static test stand, flanked on both sides by rocket launchers. You can see the launch blockhouse right behind the static test stand.

Activity slowed down for a while, but lately the RRS seems to be going full blast, if you'll pardon the expression.

Just in case you're the kind of weirdo who lives in the present, instead of the past, you can find out what the RRS is up to these days by following the links on my Links Page.
