From:  The Encyclopedia Americana

American publisher and writer who, under the pseudonym "Peter Parley," published a series of educational books for children.

He was born on Aug 19,1793, in Ridgefield, CT, and entered publishing in 1816.   By 1826 he was established in Boston as one of the most successful publishers of children's books.  His Peter Parley series, the first of which appeared in 1827, ran to 116 volumes.  Their instructional purpose was thinly disguised as fiction to make study more palatable.

From 1851 to 1853, Goodrich served as American consul in Paris.  His Recollections of a Lifetime appeared in 1856.  He died in New York City on May 9, 1860.
